Safety

At Apple Tree University Preschool and Infant Center, we prioritize the health and safety of our children and staff. Here are some of the key measures we take to ensure a secure, healthy environment.

Facility

  • Single Entry-point: Our school has a single point of entry through the main lobby. All other doors and gates remain locked while children are at school. Currently closed circuit cameras are not available but we anticipate adding them soon!

  • Regulatory Agency Partnerships: We work with our local emergency services departments to ensure we are up to date with the latest safety recommendations. Our facility is regularly inspected by our local Fire Department and the California Department of Social Services. These agencies check the safety of our classrooms and playgrounds.

  • Emergency Preparedness: Our preschool has comprehensive emergency preparedness plans in place, with trained staff and regular drills to ensure readiness for various emergency situations. Our facility maintains smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detectors and fire extinguishers. Emergency kits for children including food and drinks are kept on site. First Aid kits can be found in every classroom and the school office. Each classroom also maintains a “Go Bag” with first aid supplies, emergency contact information and consent forms for each child along with other emergency supplies.

  • Childproofing: We meticulously childproof our facilities to prevent accidents and injuries, ensuring that cabinets, drawers, and electrical outlets are secured, and potential hazards are removed or appropriately secured.

  • Cleanliness and Sanitation: We maintain a high standard of cleanliness and hygiene throughout our preschool, with regular cleaning and disinfection of toys, surfaces, and common areas. Proper handwashing practices are also emphasized to prevent the spread of illnesses.

  • Low Staff-to-Child Ratios: We maintain low staff-to-child ratios to ensure adequate supervision and safety for all children in our care.

  • Health Policies: We have clear health policies in place, including requirements for immunizations, illness exclusion policies, and procedures for administering medication when necessary.

  • Safe Outdoor Play Areas: Our outdoor play areas are designed with safety in mind, featuring age-appropriate equipment, soft surfaces, and secure fencing to prevent access to potential hazards.

Emergency Preparedness

  • To help your child and our staff feel prepared in the event of an emergency ATU participates in regular emergency drills. Fire drills are conducted monthly, earthquake drills are conducted quarterly and emergency drills are conducted twice each year. A log is kept with all information on each drill and is available for parents and guardians to review.

  • Our dedicated staff and volunteers are fully briefed on emergency procedures and know the locations of emergency supplies throughout our facility. Our teachers undergo specialized training to regulate their own emotions and remain composed during any emergency, ensuring they can model calmness and reassurance for our children, alleviating their fears. Regular practice helps familiarize both teachers and children with proper procedures, fostering a sense of confidence and readiness to keep everyone safe.

  • A one-sheet Emergency Disaster Plan (LIC 610) for our school is posted in the school lobby. We also provide a detailed outline of ATUs Emergency Disaster Plan in the Family Handbook.

Background Checks

Staff

  • ATU teaching staff are highly qualified professionals in the field of Early Childhood Development and Education. All staff meet the educational and experience requirements set by the state of California. All staff have been fingerprinted, have had a comprehensive background check conducted by the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and The Child Abuse Central Index (CACI), a Tuberculosis (TB) clearance, current immunizations for Measles and Pertussis, a preemployment physical examination and a thorough reference check. All teaching staff have completed Pediatric First Aid, CPR and Mandated Reporter training. Additional training in health and safety is completed regularly. Additionally our staff participate in regular professional development workshops and training in order to stay up to date with the most current practices in the field.

Volunteers

  • Volunteers are welcome at ATU. We believe young children benefit from having adults, in addition to their teachers, available to engage with them. Volunteers will spend time playing with, reading and engaging in activities with children. Volunteers are also encouraged to support children’s health and safety (e.g., wiping noses, helping with hand washing). All volunteers have a Tuberculosis (TB) clearance, and current immunizations for Measles and Pertussis. Volunteers are not permitted to be alone with children, assist with diaper changes, or speak with families about children’s progress. All volunteers will be under the direct supervision of our staff at all times.
